SLOPE LANDFILL: RENATURATION OF A SLOPE LANDFILL IN SICILY

Renaturation of an abandoned quarry in Lentini (Sicily island), obtained without watering and without use of topsoil, biomats, geonets, geomats, geocells, mulch, wood fiber matrix sheets, etc..

The environmental restoration of contaminated sites and old landfills often turn out to be very difficult, mainly because plant species used for the renaturation of sterile and/or contaminated soils don’t take roots easily.  Over the years several techniques have been developed for soil protection and renaturation.  Among these there is an emerging innovative technology that uses only natural herbaceous perennials plants with deep rooting system, and allows to operate in areas where climatic conditions were until a few years ago considered prohibitive for the development of vegetation: barren lands, altered or fractured rocks, soils treated with addition of lime up to 5% by weight, soil polluted by waste, hydrocarbons and heavy metals in concentrations up to 10 times higher than the upper limits admitted by law. In addition, these herbaceous plants show the ability to withstand high temperatures produced by the fermentation of organic waste in landfills.

TURFING: ABANDONED LANDFILL OF INERT MATERIALS SLOPE OF CARBONATE ROCK DEBRIS

The gully looming over the landfill Vela-Ischia Podetti of Trento needed urgent work for the safety and landscaping. The area has been divided into two zones: an upper less critical zone where  traditional grassing was used and a much more critical zone on the lowest part where excellent results were obtained with PRATI ARMATI®, technology. Disappointing results where obtained on the upper area with traditional grassing .

VARICOLOUR-CLAYS-QUARRY

Critical intervention of regreening, renaturation and blocking erosion and desertification caused by climate and the nature of soil. Two experiments were carried out in-field. A part of the area was sown with PRATI ARMATI® , and surface instability phenomena no longer appeared. The untreated area showed instead evident and progressive surface instabilities phenomena getting worse with time.
