SILTY-CLAY

SILTY-CLAY  –  What are  PRATI ARMATI®

This is a guaranteed full service, based on seeds of herbaceous perennial deep rooting plants capable to grow on almost any lithotype and climate, contrasting EROSION even on most barren ground types, re-naturalizing slopes, favouring biodiversity and accelerating ecological succession, protecting civil infrastructure and restoring polluted areas.

SILTY-CLAY  –  Where you can use PRATI ARMATI®

  • ridges and banks of motorways, roads and railways;
  • shores of lakes, rivers, torrents and channels;
  • seashores;
  • quarries, mines, landfill sites and contaminated lands.

SILTY-CLAY   –  Mixture used to sowing/hydroseeding

The PRATI ARMATI® mixture includes technical seeds, natural fertilizers, tackifying agents and soil conditioners. There is no a standard mixture of  PRATI ARMATI® technical seeds, it changes every time and is prepared according to the pedological characteristics, climate and local vegetation. Quantity and proportions of materials  needed depend on specific conditions of the site. Technical characteristics of the seeds:

  • perennial herbaceous species, many of which are AUTOCHTHONOUS of the different areas of intervention, where you can find these locally;
  • species and cultivars of gramineae and leguminosae;
  • seeds are selected according to the pedological characteristics, climate and local vegetation;
  • if necessary, the technical mixture of seeds can be integrated with seeds of flowers, bushes and trees, favouring a re-naturalization process.

SILTY-CLAY  –  Some characteristics of herbaceous species

  • perennial herbaceous species;
  • sturdy;
  • pioneer;
  • forage plants;
  • Non-GM;
  • Non-invasive;
  • withstands long lasting flooding;
  • remarkable capability to sprout after  a blaze
  • high growing speed also in extreme pedological and climatic conditions
  • root characteristics:
    • high growing speed;
    • high depth and density;
    • thin and homogeneous roots;
    • roots with high average tensile strength, up to 205 MPa.

SILTY-CLAY  –  What PRATI ARMATI® can do

  • stop erosion and desertification.
  • the seeds  grow on every sterile lithotype  (compact clay, altered or fractured rocks,  soils polluted by hydrocarbons  and heavy metals, even in concentrations 10 times above the legally permitted limits, lime added soils up to 5% in weight) without topsoil, plastic and natural materials (geonets, geogrids, geocells, geotextile meshes, natural fibre nets, mulch, bonded wood-fibre matrices, and so on);
  • if the above materials are already on-site, they can hide them, increasing their performances and landscape benefits;
  • mitigate the environmental impact of conventional civil works;
  • mutual and synergic protection of conventional civil infrastructure, reducing maintenance works;
  • accelerate the re-naturalization process;
  • subtracts up to 400% more CO2 than traditional plants, according to Kyoto Protocol;
  • increase soil shear resistance and safety factor;
  • protect and waterproof the slope  in case of heavy rainfall event;
  • protect from fractures and rifting;
  • reduce soil saturation;
  • thrive even in soils polluted with high levels of heavy metals: lead, chrome, zinc, nickel, copper, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, cobalt, antimony, selenium, and so on;
  • isolate polluting soils. Prevents the dispersion of polluting dusts via water and wind (transportation in suspension, via infiltration and wind-borne deflation);
  • change a fragile ground in a plastic “soil-roots” system.

SILTY-CLAY   –  Which pedoclimatic conditions PRATI ARMATI® can  withstand

  • adaptable to extreme soil and climatic conditions within a temperature range of –45°C to +60°C, resistant within a pH range between pH 4 and pH 11
  • climates from  very dry to very wet;
  • on practically any lithotype and climate, even on most barren ground types: clay, silt, sands, gravel, flysh, lime added soils, granular soil ridges without top soil, and so on;
  • on soils polluted by hydrocarbons and heavy metals;
  • on salty soil

SILTY-CLAY   –  Advantages of  PRATI ARMATI®

  • very fast planting process (many hectares per day);
  • doesn’t need:
    1. top soil (seeds can grow on any lithotype)
    2. plastic and natural materials like geonets, geocells, geogrids, geotextile meshes, natural fibre nets, mulch, bonded wood-fibre matrices, topsoil, and so on;
  • safety planting process;
  • natural and non-toxic materials, simple and safety machines;
  • maintenance works like irrigation, fertilization and grass cutting are not necessary;
  • protects water capturing and control systems (e.g. drainage systems, ditches, trench drains), keeping them clean and efficient, avoiding clogging and eliminating maintenance works;
  • antierosion efficiency improves over time;
  • re-profile work of the slope needs (if it is possible) only a course-grained soil surface finish;
  • a zero-maintenance technique;
  • able to facilitate re-naturalization and ecological succession by incorporating any desired seed of flowers, shrubs or trees;
  • able to capture CO2 up to 400% more than common grassy plants
  • capable to reduce, with respect to traditional techniques:
    • up to 100 times the weight of required materials
    • up to 10 times the energy requirements
    • up to 10 times polluting emissions (CO2  CO  NOx  SO particulate)
    • on-site working times and site-related risks
    • up to 50% of economical costs.

SILTY-CLAY  –  In combination with

All traditional or environmental engineering solutions (like gabions, fences, reinforced ground, rockfall protection netting) used to stabilize the slope, to improve the environmental impact.
